A Holistic Approach to Improve Your Golf Game

Like any other sport, physical fitness, practice and etiquette play an important role. This article will cover a more holistic view of playing golf and improving your game.

Golf Fitness:
- You'll never be a great golfer unless you keep you body and mind it shape. I know the truth hurts. But all the great players will devote a good portion of their schedule at the gym. Besides the obvious health benefits, you'll be able to enjoy the game long after you retire.

- Eat right. Stay away from high fat and sugar loaded foods. Don't have that doughnut and coffee in the morning. Have a glass of juice with some high fiber cereal. If you must have coffee, try to drink it black. The antioxidants and mild caffeine in coffee have been shown to be beneficial to your health. Avoid loading your coffee with creamers and sugar. Also avoid artificial sweeteners.

- Exercise regularly. Include a cardiovascular regimen to help you get around the course and it's great for your heart. Walking, jogging, biking, take your pick. Swimming is also a great way to improve your breathing and overall body fitness since it targets all your muscle groups. Add weight training to improve your power strokes.

- Exercise your mind. Crossword puzzles, reading golf magazines, and reading the newspaper with your black coffee are all excellent mental exercises. Mental fitness requires a daily regimen as well. Meditation, Tai Chi, spending time with family and friends all help reduce stress and will improve your game. Don't underestimate this important step.

Practice:
- You need to develop a practice routine that is consistent and regular. Just playing the game is not enough. Try out new techniques, new clubs or improve on existing techniques. Your brain will develop new pathways and muscle memory that will carry over into your game. A rule of thumb is to practice twice as much as you play.

- Take classes or sign up for a lesson or two with a more advanced player. You'll always learn something new and will level up your golf skills. Do this at least once per year. It takes dedication to become a better player and to improve year after year.

Etiquette
- Golf is a gentlemen's game. Become familiar with the rules of conduct and practice them in your head and on the course. Being a great player doesn't always mean having the lowest score. Being able to enjoy golf with other players, whether on your team or just on the course, is just as important as the game itself.

Be sure to check the location of the ball with clubs aligned on the ground. Step away to check that you are positioning the ball properly. Ask someone to double-check your positioning. It is hard, without alignment tape or clubs, to visually gauge the proper placement of the ball.

Cast Iron Golf Clubs Or Forged?

With a larger variety of golf clubs coming onto the scene every week, it can become more and more difficult to determine just exactly what you should be looking for when buying new clubs.

Follow along as we discuss each type and what may be best for you.

As a rule of thimb, it should be noted that "off the shelf" golf clubs will work for most everyone standing between five and six foot in heightl. And it doesn't matter if you are male or female, the general rule applies. If you are taller or shorter than those measurements, then you may have to consider looking for custom made clubs.

Cast Iron or Forged Iron Golf Club?

The answer normally is "cast iron".

The major reason? Because of the bigger "sweet spot" we tend to find on clubs made with cast iron. This is the are in the center of the club face where "forces" are said to be perfectly balanced to deliver the perfect shot. The bigger the sweet spot, the better chance of hitting well it every time. You can still be a little "off center" and the ball is still struck well because you have a larger margin of error. It is for that main reason the beginners are steered towards cast iron clubs. Their swing is not as consistant as a seasoned golfer or a pro and so they have an easier time driving the ball well with a larger sweet spot at their disposal. That is why you see a lot of oversized club heads on the market today. They allow average duffers the opportunity of striking the ball well and getting great drives more often.

Conversely, forged iron golf clubs have a much smaller sweet spot and it is far more difficult to hit a ball well with this kind of club.

So why are forged clubs even sold?

For a very simple reason. Cast iron is a softer metal that offers a better "feel" on a shot. The more experienced player has a much more defined and repeatable swing, allowing them to hit the smaller sweet spot with much more consistancy. They don't need that larger "margin of error" the beginner needs. And now, the better "feel" allows him or her the added advantage of being able to manoevre and/or "shape" each shot to the circumstances as needed.

The shaft of the club is the next item to look at. What will it be made of? A composite or steel?

The significant factor here is club head speed. A typical golfer will have a club velocity between 80-94 mph. A slower swing speed means you had better think of using a shaft made from composite material, not steel. The result of lower swing speed is less yardage on each shot. You want to find some way to offset your lower swing speed. And that is where the composite golf club shaft enters the picture. It gives you a lot more distance than you would get with your normal swing and a steel shaft.

For those of you with faster swing speeds, and subsequenlty good distances, steel shafted clubs will give you a lot more control on your shots. This is very similar to the advantages of iron over cast clubs.

In order to determine your personal swing speed, look for a sports shop or golf store that has speed sensor equipment and get yourself clocked.

With simply these few starting hints, it is ordinarily best if you rent a few different sets of clubs as you play and take note of how each club helps or impedes your game. You are searching to learn your personal strengths as well as weaknesses. Use as many clubs as you can beg, borrow, steal or rent. The more you use, the more you will learn about your own game.

If you implement these tips and work on them, you will be certain to develop a better drive within a short period of time. Just keep on practicing and working on your improvement. It's only a matter of time before your scores begin to drop.

Use Your Body For Power

Positioning of the Hands
As with any stroke, the path of the ball will be dictated by the positioning of the hands and feet, so these should be adjusted in order to send the ball right with the correct amount of spin to curve it round. The clubface should remain square on to the ball but the feet and shoulders should be aligned to the right. This will result in the clubface swinging on an inside to outside path and placing the correct spin of the ball so that it curves rather than travels in a straight line.
